Who can use 5G, and how do I get it?
To access 5G as a Kiwi Mobile customer you'll need a 5G capable mobile device with its software updated to enable 5G, and be within 2Degrees (whose network we leverage) 5G coverage.
2Degrees 5G has been rolled out across select parts of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch - with more areas in the works. For further details check out our coverage page.
How can I check if my device supports 5G?
iPhone
Only iPhone 12 (including Mini, Pro and Pro Max) and later models support 5G. This is because they are built with the Apple A14 Bionic processor.
Currently with iPhone if you're using Dual SIM, 5G isn't available if both SIMs are active. You'll need to disable Dual SIM mode by turning off one of your SIMs. See below for details on how to do this:
- Go to "Settings.
- Tap and open "Cellular."
- Choose the SIM that you want to disable.
- Then "Turn off" the switch next to "Turn on this Line."
That will turn off the selected SIM. To switch back to the Dual SIM mode, just turn the switch mentioned above back on.
Android
One of the easiest ways to check if your smartphone supports 5G is to look up its specifications online. Usually a simple "does *phone model* support 5G?" will do the trick.
Otherwise, you can check it in your phone's settings using the below steps after making sure the latest update has been installed:
- Open network settings
Go to "Settings" and select "Preferred network type." - Check if it supports 5G
On the "Preferred network type" screen you'll see all the specifications and networks supported by your phone listed. If 5G appears here then your phone supports 5G.
Why is there a 5G symbol in the corner of my screen?
This means you're already using 5G. If your phone is capable with the up to date software, 5G will automatically be used when available.
Does Kiwi Mobile work with other companies to enable 5G?
We leverage the 2Degrees network to ensure our customers have access to a reliable, trustworthy network. They have partnered with 5G Ericsson, who are a global leader in this technology.
What's the difference between 3G, 4G and 5G coverage?
5G is quicker and can handle more data than 4G and 3G. It can give you faster downloads, less lag, and a more reliable connection. To put it in terms of a video call:
- 3G: Video calls can be a bit choppy and sometimes drop out.
- 4G: Video calls look clearer and stay fairly stable.
- 5G: Video calls are super clear, almost like you're in the same room - and even more stable
Is 5G safe?
Just like 2G, 3G, and 4G before it, 5G tech has been thoroughly tested by independent groups to ensure it won’t affect the health and well-being of Kiwis.
